"I'm a Christ Follower" (MAC vs. PC Parody)
Thoughts?
I wonder how long it will be until the people at some of the anti-emergent blogs get ahold of these and use them to rip postmodernism in the church. They'll have a point. I also wonder if they just read Blue Like Jazz or something (great book). I mean the whole "I'm a Christ follower" thing is soooo 2005.
Here's the thing: Whoever is responsible for these videos is trying to make a point about relevance, and I agree with the point. The problem is being relevant and tearing other Christians down are two different things. This videos don't touch on what "emerging" is or should be about. This videos simply ridicule other Christians.
It seems to me that there is probably a good way to have such a dialog, and these videos are a great illustration of how NOT TO do so. Someone missed the point.
A Christ follower? Let's start following Christ by not ridiculing people who worship Christ is ways different than our own. I get it, I really do, and I agree with the sentiment of what is being said in the videos. I just think there is a better way to say it.
Update: I'm more than a little surprised to learn that these videos came from Community Christian Church in Naperville, a fine church (and one I have attended) located about 1 minute up the road from my own, and one that I know is doing good things. That said, I think they really missed the boat with these videos.
Update 2: Much of the commentary on these videos is very positive. I think there is an element of positivity in them, but it's overshadowed by condescension. I have blogged here a number of times about how it's okay not to dress up for church, and how those of us who don't dress up shouldn't be frowned upon for our casualness. Here's the flip side: People who attend church dressed casually judging those who feel a desire to dress up for church. I don't see how reversing the judgmentalism or legalism is any better.
